Richard G. Spaulding, Jr., is a veteran teacher of Latin and Ancient Greek with over two decades of experience teaching classical languages in highly individualized, student-centered environments. Since 2004, he has taught at The Woodhall School in Connecticut, where he designed and expanded a comprehensive Latin and Greek curriculum—ranging from introductory to AP-level and advanced Greek courses—tailored to the diverse learning styles of his students.

Drawing on a deep foundation in classical philology and pedagogy—strengthened by graduate work at the University of Vermont and study at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens—Richard brings academic rigour, creativity, and adaptability to his teaching. He specializes in multimodal instruction, educational technology, and curriculum development, ensuring students at all levels and backgrounds can meaningfully access the ancient languages.

Beyond the classics classroom, Richard also directs Woodhall’s technical theatre program, where he mentors students in lighting, sound design, and stagecraft—an extension of his commitment to hands-on learning and mentorship. His students have gone on to earn awards and pursue theatre at the collegiate level. He has also served as a group facilitator in communication programs, coached physical training, and advised debate and chess clubs.

Richard’s approach is rooted in a belief that Latin and Greek are not only intellectually rewarding but deeply humanising disciplines—well-suited to building confidence, discipline, and self-expression in young learners.
